I have questions before I purchase the SD card

Will the maps work on my GPS?

The maps will work on any Garmin GPS that can be connected to the computer.  The pre-loaded microSD/SD card version of the map will only work on Garmin GPS units that have the external memory capability (slot for an SD or microSD card).  If your GPS doesn't take the memory cards you can still use the maps by purchasing the download or CD version and installing the map onto your computer, then hooking up your GPS and sending the maps from your computer to the GPS.

How current is the ownership?

The ownership and property boundaries are updated year to year.  Check the website for the exact date that the ownership was updated, because it will vary from state to state.

Can I load multiple states on one chip?

Yes, if you purchase the download version you can use your computer to send multiple states to one microSD/SD chip.

I have bad eyes and would like to use the map on the bigger screen of my laptop. Can I do this?

Yes, you can use your laptop as a GPS.  You will need the download version of the map and you will need software called nRoute.  nRoute is basically MapSource but you can hook up your GPS to acquire satellites and plot your position on the computer screen.  Download nRoute HERE!

Can I still mark waypoints & log tracks?

Yes, all the functionality of your GPS will remain the same, only the map that you see your data on will change.

I already have topo on my GPS, will your map erase these maps?

If you already have topo detail in your GPS, you most likely have either a microSD in your GPS with the topo data on it or you have a topo basemap preloaded from the factory.  If you have a chip with the topo data, you will simply remove that chip and replace it with your new chip.  If for some odd reason you would want to go back to the old topo maps that you had, then you would simply re-insert the chip.  If your GPS came preloaded with topo (400T/550T/etc.), when you insert your new chip it will simply cover up the preloaded basemap, but only in the state you ordered.  If you want to see your topo basemap in that state again, simply remove the microSD chip.  (This does not apply to the transparent maps offered)

I don't see any of the city roads or back roads. How do I get them to appear?

Zoom-in.  Data is leveled so the map doesn't get too cluttered at certain zoom levels.  Some data only loads at certain zoom levels. If you don't see a feature you expect - ZOOM-IN.

Do you have to buy a new map every year?

No, you can send in your chip with $20, or call if you have the download, to get an update of the ownership.

How often are the maps updated?

Maps are updated at least once a year as new ownership information becomes available.

Will it show where I'm at?

Yes, that's the whole idea behind the map.  With the map on your GPS you will be able to see where you are at relative to public and private property boundaries.

How do your maps compare to your competitor's?

Many people who have compared our maps directly with our competitor's maps would agree that our maps are much more functional.  We are displaying much more data with faster loading times.  This means you can look at a wider area of the map to browse for certain ownership and property boundaries.  When looking for a GPS map, compare the map features and look at screenshots from the GPS units to see how the map is displayed on the GPS.  Make sure the screenshots are from an actual GPS unit.

Be sure to ask about the currency of the ownership data if it isn't displayed on the website.  Ask or read about their update policy. Ask how you obtain data from the map (Are owner names, road names, creek names, etc.  visible on the map?  Do you have to select small point features to obtain information or can you simply select anywhere in the area of interest?)  How far do I have to zoom in before this piece of data loads?  Does the map run really slow if I try to browse public lands at a more-zoomed-out zoom level?

Here is what the guys at a few sporting goods store GPS counters had to say after comparing our maps with a competitor's:

"When we used to carry the competitor's maps, we would show them side by side in a GPS to the customer and they would pick the HuntingGPSmap every time - no matter the price difference."

"Your competitor's maps are archaic when compared to your maps''

Will my other maps be erased?

No, the map will simply cover up your basemap in the area you ordered.  If you have another mapset loaded on an SD card that is currently in your GPS, you will remove that card and replace it with your new SD card to load the new map.  If you want to go back to your other mapset, simply plug that card back into the GPS.

Will your map work with my other maps?

Some will and some won't.  If the map is described as a 'Transparent' Map then it is designed to be combined with other maps.  The Public/Private Land Boundary Topo Maps are a complete mapset that will cover up any other map.  These maps have detailed topo, roads, rivers, lakes, creeks, cities, etc; so you don't need any other mapset.

Do I need a Topo program on my GPS before I order your PLAT4GPS or BLM4GPS map?

No, our PLAT4GPS, BLM4GPS,and RECMAPs all come with Topo detail included on the map!

I purchased the microSD card and have Questions

What does the blue color represent? What is the green line?

Every feature on the map can be selected to view info about the feature name or what it represents.  Use your cursor (or touch the screen on newer units) to select any feature.

I live in a flat part of the state and there isn't enough topo detail on the map to tell where the rises and falls are in the landscape - Is there a way to fix this?

The only thing that may help is loading the most detailed topo data at a more-zoomed out zoom level.  Change your Map Detail setting to MOST - see how to do this in the Support topics

I plugged in the microSD card but it doesn't look like anything changed.

First, Double-check that you have inserted the microSD card properly into the GPS - Watch this Video for Details on Installing your microSD card.  Next, zoom out to where you can see the whole boundary of the state that you ordered.  Then zoom in to an area within that state (if you live in another state, you must pan map to the state you ordered and zoom in).  You must zoom in until your map scale represents 2 miles before the ownership coloring will load.  Continue to zoom to see roads, topo, and other map details.  If you can't see a feature that you would expect to see, ZOOM IN.

If you have zoomed in to your area and still don't see what you expected to see, you can verify that the map is loaded by going to the 'Map Information' page on your GPS.  This Tutorial will show you how to access the 'Map Info' area on your GPS

In the Map Information area of your GPS, you should be able to see the name of the map you purchased, for example, if I ordered the map for Montana I would see MT_PLAT4GPS.  If you don't see the map name that you ordered, the chip may have been dislodged while the batteries were snapped into the GPS.  Check the chip again.  Call us if you still don't see the map in the Map Information page on your GPS

I have Questions before I purchase the Download/CD

Do I need both the download & SD card?

No, if you want to be able to use the map on both your computer and your GPS, you can simply purchase the download version.  Once you have it on your computer you can send the state to your own SD card by connecting your GPS to the computer.

I purchased the Download/CD and have Questions

I downloaded the file & it didn't change anything on my computer?

You must have MapSource or Basecamp installed on your computer, then double-click the .exe file that you downloaded to run the installation wizard. Please read the tutorials again if you are having trouble.

I get an error in MapSource - unable to start the unlock wizard - re-install and try again?

You need to update to the most current version of MapSource.  Please read Tutorial 2 again if you are having trouble.

While unlocking it is asking for a Product ID or Serial Key - I don't have this?

DO NOT select 'unlock online' - You need to select the 'Unlock Regions' tab in the Map Product Manager of MapSource or Basecamp.  Close your web browser and return to MapSource to select the 'Unlock Regions' tab in the Map Product Manager window.  Then select the 'ADD' button to enter your unlock code.

Please re-read Tutorial 2 if you are having trouble.

I downloaded the file but I have two Garmin GPSs. Can I put it on more than one?

Yes, the download version of our maps allow for two unlock codes to be generated. This allows the map to be transferred to two units. Please ask about additional unlocks.
